The Alfa Laval Wet Surface Air Cooler (WSAC®) is a closed loop evaporative cooler used in liquid cooling, single phase gas cooling and turbine exhaust vacuum steam condensing applications. WSAC® uses evaporative cooling to reject heat from a process stream. The process stream flows in the tube bundles and the recirculated water is sprayed on the outside of the tube bundles creating the evaporative cooling effect. This way the water is never in contact with the process stream. Alfa Laval Niagara WSACs are used in a wide range of industries such as oil & gas, refining, petrochemicals, and power.

    How Wet Surface Air Coolers Work

    Alfa Laval Niagara Wet Surface Air Coolers (WSAC®) are fully customized closed-loop cooling and condensing systems. By circulating warm fluid or vapour through a closed-loop tube system, WSACs can induce cooling without the risk of open air contact or contamination and can eliminate the need for a heat exchanger.

    Breakdown of the process

    1. Air is induced downward over the tube bundles.
    2. Water is sprayed over the bundles, and travels downward along with the air.
    3. A warm process stream (liquids, vapors, or hydrocarbons) flows through tube bundle. Heat from the process stream is released to the cascading water, and a cooled process stream exits.
    4. Vaporization transfers heat from cascading water to the air stream.
    5. The air stream is forced to turn 180° providing maximum free water removal.
    6. Fans discharge air vertically at a high velocity to minimize recirculation.

    Alfa Laval Niagara Wet Surface Air Coolers (WSAC®) are fully customized closed-loop cooling and condensing systems that offer many advantages over traditional methods. As a closed loop system, there is no risk of contaminants entering the process stream and no need for heat exchangers. WetSurface technology (WSAC®) systems offer a unique combination of high cooling performance, low operating costs and compact size. For lower ∆T WSAC® are cheaper than chillers with respect to initial capital costs and power (operating) costs. When temperature approach is 25°C the chillers start to get expensive, that is when WSAC® can be used for a much economical option.

    In a WSAC® the water source does not have to be clean, it can be sourced from the sea, lake, lagoon etc. In a hybrid system the WSAC® can be placed in parallel to a cooling tower and can be turned off when not in use like during winter. For the same heat load, the size of WSAC® is about the same when compared to a cooling tower.
