The two basic principles of separation are: Sedimentation
and Filtration. The Alfa Laval range of equipment uses the
sedimentation technique through Rotating Wall centrifuges.
The settling velocity, hence the separation efficiency, is increased
by introducing rotation. The same degree of efficiency cannot be
accomplished in an ordinary settling tank where gravitational separation
is used. Introducing centrifugal force and applying the principle
of density difference between two liquids or between a liquid and
a solid achieve the separation.
Applications
The Alfa Laval product range is based on disc stack centrifuges
and decanter centrifuges for separating liquids from each other
or for removing solid particles from liquids. These products are

industries, on board ships to purify fuel and lubricating oil, on
