Biomass Heat Exchangers

Biomass heating utilizes wood, corn or any other combustable material to provide heat for homes, office buildings, workshops and warehouses. They are also used to provide hot water in food processing facilities and are even used for the heating of swimming pools. Biomass systems provide hot water for these applications and our heat exchangers are used to extract the heat from the hot water. Please see below for descriptions of some typical applications:

Isolation of Hot Water from Biomass Heating Systems

Brazed Heat Exchangers

In many cases such as with outdoor wood furnaces the water side of the system operates at atmospheric pressure. These systems are often tied into pressurized water systems in single dwelling homes, condominiums or apartment buildings. Due to the difference in pressure these systems must be isolated from each other and this requires a heat exchanger. The most effective style of heat exchanger for these applications is the brazed plate as they are capable of operating with very low temperature differentials. For example a wood boiler will typically provide water at 170F and the indoor boiler requires a high temperature to effectively heat domestic hot water and provide a sufficient temperature for radiators to work effectively. Therefore the indoor boiler will operate most effectively at a temperature as close to 170F as possible. Plate heat exchangers are the only style of heat exchanger which can provide these close temperature approaches. Click here to learn more about our brazed plate heat exchangers.

Utilization of Biomass Heating Systems for Forced Air Heating

Air To Water Heat Exchangers

Our HTL series of air-water heat exchangers are designed to transfer heat from hot water to the air within a household, shop or commercial building. They are typically installed in furnace plenums and the fan from the furnace blows air across the coil which transfers heat from the water to increase the air temperature. This takes the burden off the furnace and in many cases the furnace is no longer used. This results in a significantly reduced heating cost as the biomass burned is often available for free or at least at a cost significantly lower than natural gas. The HTL units are also installed into unit heaters which blow air across a workshop or warehouse. Click here to learn more about our air to water heat exchangers.

Using Biomass Heating Systems for Heating of Domestic Hot Water

Sidearm Heat Exchangers

A common application for wood furnaces is to utilize the hot water to heat domestic water. This is typically done using either a brazed plate heat exchanger or by using a sidearm style heat exchanger. The sidearm units are popular in these systems are they are designed to maximize thermal convection to produce a constant recirculation of hot water. They are often referred to as thermosiphon units for this reason. The use of convection is popular as it negates the need for a recirculation pump resulting in reduced electrical costs over time. The reduced electrical cost coupled with a reduced heating cost can result in fairly short paybacks for these systems. Click here to learn more about our sidearm heat exchangers.

Biomass Heating Systems for Spa and Pool Heating

Pool Heat Exchangers

Biomass heating systems such as wood boilers require an external heat exchanger to isolate the corrosive swimming pool water from the boiler system. Our CN and SS series units are designed to handle the large flowrates of spas and pools.

CN series solar pool heaters are designed with corrosion resistant cupro-nickel tubes and bronze end covers making them ideal for dealing with the effects of salt water. See CN Series

Biomass Heating Systems for Spa and Pool Heating

Pool Heat Exchangers

We offer the SS-Series swimming pool heat exchangers for standard spas and swimming pools. The SS-Series pool heaters are constructed of stainless steel 316. See SS-Series

Biomass Heating Systems for Spa and Pool Heating

Pool Heat Exchangers

We offer titanium solar pool heaters for both chlorinated pools and salt water pools. Our biomass pool heaters provide a simple method of heating pool and spa water indirectly from a central heating boiler. See Titanium Series
